Reduction in Force (RIF) Preference

RIF Preference interviews help experienced University employees find employment after their jobs have been subject to a Reduction In Force.  Policy 5-110: Reduction in Force and Severance Pay outlines the process in detail:  http://regulations.utah.edu/human-resources/5-110.php

Hiring managers shall give an interview to employees who have RIF Preference if the following criteria are met:

  1. A job candidate with RIF Preference applies for a job in the hiring manager’s department
  2. The job candidate meets the minimum qualifications of the job
  3. The job is at the same or lower grade as the job candidate’s job position that was subject to a RIF

RIF Preference Notes

  • RIF Preference lasts for up to 6 months from the date of separation
  • Departments can choose their method of interviewing but all job candidates selected for interviews should be interviewed with the same format and condition (Examples include, but are not limited to: Phone, In-person, Panel, etc)
