Compensation Procedures
15. Work Hours
The workweek at the University begins at 12:01 a.m. Saturday and ends at midnight the following Friday. Each department establishes standard hours of operation and schedules employees accordingly.
Work hours include not only the time spent performing the duties of the job, but also:
- time spent changing clothes, if the employee is required to wear a uniform or special clothing at the work place;
- time spent traveling from one work location to another;
- time spent traveling to a distant location during the employee’s regular working hours; and
- rest periods of no more than 15 minutes for every four hours worked.
Attendance at lectures, meetings, training programs and similar activities must be counted as working time unless all four of the following criteria are met:
- attendance is outside the employee’s regular working hours;
- attendance is voluntary;
- the program is not directly related to the employee’s job; and
- the employee does not perform any work during such attendance that is related to his/her position.
Courses taken to satisfy a continuing education requirement for maintaining a state license or certification need not be treated as compensable time under the Fair Labor Standards Act and University policy.
Meal breaks are not counted toward hours worked as long as the employee has at least 20 consecutive minutes free from all duties during the lunch period.
