Job Summary

Assists the Principal Investigator and/or Department Head in managing the engineering activities of a department. Provides leadership and management of personnel and resources for engineering projects. Provides counsel and support for the definition of engineering goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); six years experience in scientific research or engineering development; demonstrated communication skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Experience should include project or organizational management.

Preference is given for an advanced degree in a scientific or engineering field and for publication of original research or project development in peer reviewed scientific journals, recognized professional society or engineering journals.

Essential Functions

1. Assists in the management of engineering division functions and operations.
2. Participates in defining and assessing long-term engineering goals of the department, including the proposal of new and original research objectives.
3. Participates in updating the division organizational structure in order to enhance the effectiveness of laboratory operations. Reviews engineering projects and funding status in support of current and long-term operations.
4. Writes and coordinates engineering sections in grant proposals and reports.
5. Presents and publishes research and development results related to departmental engineering activities to conferences and/or in journals.
6. Directs planning, designing, creating and testing of products and/or systems.
7. Defines and coordinates project objectives and requirements in collaboration with the client.
8. Manages project resources so as to comply with project budgets.
9. Provides progress reports and interim results.
10. Trains technicians and engineers.
11. Provides test and measurement support for design and development activities.
12. Supervises the activities of technicians and engineering personnel.
13. Provides technical assistance for engineering laboratories in academic courses.
14. Compiles and maintains complete records of all equipment and engineering activities within the department.
15. Identifies and purchases necessary parts, supplies and equipment for operations.
16. Serves as a point of contact between department and industrial partners.

Problem Solving

The incumbent makes hire/fire/salary recommendations involving employees under his/her direction. He/she independently forms procedures to be performed in creating and testing products/systems. This position may be given budgetary control regarding supplies and equipment, however, major purchases require approval from the supervisor. The incumbent may also represent the department in making contacts with other agencies which can potentially provide needed support for department operations. The Senior Engineer provides input in making department engineering changes or in the establishment of goals and objectives.

The incumbent is called upon to participate in an advisory capacity to solve organizational problems, staffing problems and issues surrounding the status of engineering projects.

Comments

The incumbent may be required to work long hours, including weekends, and travel throughout Utah and neighboring states.
