Job Summary

Designs, constructs, calibrates, adapts, tests and/or troubleshoots sophisticated instrumentation used in research projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or research related field plus three years of related engineering experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

1. Conducts research in a specialized engineering discipline to advance known engineering theories and principles.
2. Plans and conducts or directs complex engineering experiments to test, prove or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of other research in related technological areas.
3. Designs or modifies the design of instruments, equipment, machinery and/or experimental prototypes and instructs technicians in the fabrication of the finished product.
4. Acts as an information source to faculty members, researchers, students and technicians in meeting instrumentation needs.
5. Writes or assists in writing technical portions of grant and contract proposals or reports to funding agencies.
6. Performs sophisticated troubleshooting as needed.

Problem Solving

Incumbent independently determines procedures performed in experiments and testing of prototypes, instruments, etc. This position may be given budgetary control regarding supplies and equipment, however major purchases require approval from the supervisor. The incumbent may also represent the department in making contacts with other agencies which can potentially provide needed support for department operations.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Seldom: Hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
