Job Summary

Performs engineering work of moderate complexity requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria while carrying out a sequence of related engineering techniques.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field plus two years engineering experience or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required.

Specific areas of expertise may be preferred by departments.

Essential Functions

  1. Plans, designs and constructs or supervises the construction of components and/or systems using established engineering practices.
  2. Performs tests, device investigations and calculations in order to evaluate performance of engineering designs.
  3. Prepares reports on performance results and makes recommendations for improvements.
  4. Coordinates the accomplishment of program tasks and goals with other engineers. May supervise the activities of associate engineers and technical assistants.
  5. May oversee the process of construction projects including conceptualizing construction schematics, scheduling, estimating budget expenditures, preparing bidding/construction documents and monitoring the construction process.
  6. Selects appropriate equipment, materials, techniques, procedures and systems for specific projects.
  7. Provides design and creative guidance to University faculty, staff and students. Works with customers and management to define engineering specifications.
  8. May train technicians in engineering techniques. May implement and coordinate a training program for facility users.
  9. Assure the integrity of lab setups, which involves many types of equipment. Setups may include computer data acquisition systems and custom programming.
  10. Assists in maintaining a safe and effective work environment.

Problem Solving

Incumbent has the authority to oversee the construction of specific projects including assigning work to associate engineers and technical staff. The incumbent may make budget recommendations regarding the costs of certain procedures or the purchase of equipment and supplies. This position may select appropriate supplies and materials in order to achieve a finished product. Work may involve off-campus contracting.

Problems encountered in this position deal with overcoming complex engineering challenges. The incumbent must be able to determine the most cost effective way to create components or systems and to redesign systems which are not producing the desired results.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking. 

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.
