Job Summary

Oversees the day-to-day functions of assigned department. Applies knowledge of library science principles to optimize production and quality and quantity of work. Assists in establishing and implementing departmental processes and procedures. Plans and budgets for hiring and scheduling. Other personnel matters include training, performance reviews and determining disciplinary action.

Qualifications

Six years related experience including one year supervisory experience or equivalency required; basic knowledge of library science techniques and principles in order to provide oversight to assigned area required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises staff including interviewing, hiring, reviewing, disciplining, training and organizing work of staff.
  2. Sets individual and departmental goals; conducts staff meetings to communicate those goals.
  3. Oversees building and materials maintenance including the security systems and alarms.
  4. Schedules assigned staff for appropriate area coverage while staying within budgetary limits.
  5. Interprets and applies policies and procedures related to patrons and staff; makes recommendations for improvement.
  6. Processes and edits new and existing records; adapts formats using established rules and procedures.
  7. Provides basic to upper-level reference assistance by applying in-depth knowledge of specialized area.
  8. Assists in the preparation of various library materials, which will be available for staff or the general library population.
  9. Conducts database searches as well as instructs patrons in the use of the library database and computer systems.
  10. Resolves difficult issues regarding patrons, employees, vendors and technical equipment; processes and waives overdue fines, and releases holds on student records.

Problem Solving

Supervisors are responsible for the overall performance of their assigned area. Typically these areas have high turnover rates and the hiring and training activities demand a significant portion of the supervisor's time. In addition, the incumbent must balance payroll constrains against the departments coverage needs. The Supervisor is also responsible for resolving conflicts with vendors, employees and library patron's.
