Job Title: Sr Library Specialist

Job Summary

Utilizes specialized library knowledge and tools to assist library patrons with non-routine or ambiguous requests. Performs in-depth research for patrons, including locating rare books or locating non-specific information. Within established policies and procedures, assumes responsibility for assigned unit during supervisor's absence; includes disseminating and evaluating the employees work and adjusting coverage schedules if necessary.

Qualifications

Four years library experience or equivalency; knowledge of specialized library techniques and principles as well as research and organizational skills required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Some supervisory experience may be preferred.

There are two levels in the Senior Library Specialist position. The level II position requires an additional two years of experience functioning as a Senior Library Specialist. Only Senior Library Specialists will be eligible for placement within this position.

Essential Functions

  1. Researches automated databases for ILL (Inter-Library Loan), circulation and ordering; performs advanced coding procedures and processes requests for specialized areas such as foreign languages or technical materials.
  2. Conducts specialized searches using bibliographic tools and automated databases; determines process to complete requests.
  3. Creates and produces reports using databases or other statistical software to collect, manipulate and store data.
  4. Orders specialized materials and recommends changes in contracts with vendors and other libraries based upon knowledge of valuable or problematic materials.
  5. Audits for errors and resolves problems in cataloging, ordering, payments, fines and patron interaction utilizing judgment to know when to refer problems to the next level.
  6. Participates in unit project planning and problem analysis and resolution.
  7. Assists with hiring, training, performance evaluation, and determination of work assignments for subordinates.
  8. Performs clerical duties including data entry, filing and general maintenance for assigned area.

Problem Solving

The incumbent must have the ability to exercise sound judgement in resolving complex patron and employee problems such as the ability to analyze and solve technical problems with reports or databases. Determines when to make exceptions to policy and procedure. The incumbent has the authority to release fines and holds on student records. The incumbent is also responsible for the organization and allocation of tasks and assists with scheduling of support staff in assigned area.
