Job Summary

Completes circulation, cataloging and ordering requests for library patrons and vendors. Follows established policies and practices in conjunction with applying general library knowledge in completing assigned tasks. Performs data entry to order and track library materials, establish records and process library related books, catalogs and general information.

Qualifications

Two years library, data entry, clerical or related experience required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Familiarity with a foreign language may be preferred in some areas.

Essential Functions

  1. Utilizes automated databases for ILL (Inter-Library Loan), circulation, cataloging and ordering to process materials such as journals, newspapers, microfilm, CD's, maps, bibliographic information and governmental documents.
  2. Conducts searches using standard bibliographic tools and automated databases, to determine library holdings or order status;utilizes this information to assist patrons, order materials and run standard statistical reports.
  3. Completes customary requests for library materials such as in stock books or straightforward exchanges with other libraries.
  4. Performs clerical duties including data entry, filing and general maintenance for assigned area.
  5. Administers routine database maintenance with-in established guidelines such as transfers, collection changes or withdrawals.
  6. Applies and collects monies for undisputed fines, fees and charges; disputed fines are referred to senior library staff.
  7. Processes, edits, and revises routine data pertaining to library materials and borrowers.
  8. Assists with training of lower level employees.

Problem Solving

The incumbent must remain calm when assisting upset patrons who must pay fines that they believe to be unjustified. If there are discrepancies in the availability of requested materials the incumbent utilizes their training and knowledge to resolve the problem quickly and professionally. When the incumbent is faced with circumstances beyond their pre-determined authority, the problem is referred to the senior library staff or the Supervisor for resolution.
