Job Summary

Creates television programs for broadcast on KUED-TV and other media uses. Chairs the Public Affairs Advisory Board, which is designed to coordinate ideas and recommend production strategies for locally produced public affairs programming.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field; five years demonstrated experience in public, commercial or instructional television, or equivalency; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. The five years should include experience in the following: production experience in journalistic or public affairs based programming; studio, remote and field work; experience as a camera host, moderator or talent; public relations skills; and off line and on line editing experience. Must be able to work under stressful situations and have an understanding of journalistic, ethical and editorial convention.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs research to identify critical issues that can be addressed successfully in a public television programming format.
  2. Initiates and directs the construction of television programs which are broadcast locally, regionally, and nationally. Creates the design of the entire program and supervises the field production and post-production assembly.
  3. Manages, trains and oversees the activities of technical personnel involved with broadcast projects.
  4. Represents KUED to community groups and media and professional journalist organizations. Assists in the formulation of professional standards and policies.
  5. Serves as an Executive Producer for public affairs programs produced by independent contractors for KUED.
  6. Develops and manages project budgets up to $100,000.
  7. Serves as "on-air" host for a wide range of KUED programs.
  8. Acts as a station resource regarding media law as it relates to public affairs and political programming activities. Ensures balance, objectivity and accuracy for public affairs programming.
  9. Acts as Chair of the KUED Public Affairs Advisory Board. Organizes meetings, participates in strategy and planning activities, and serves as KUED's liaison to the public by responding to questions, concerns and complaints regarding locally produced public affairs programming.
  10. Serves as a coordinator and mentor for University academic internships at KUED.
  11. Participates in post production evaluations and may serve as off line editor.
  12. Maintains a high level of technical expertise by participating in workshops, conferences and other professional development activities.

Problem Solving

The incumbent is directly responsible for the content and quality of production assignments and is authorized to make decisions relating to content and execution. This position is responsible for the project budget and has authority to make binding contracts for services to be rendered to KUED. He/she makes hire and termination recommendations and may make program recommendations affecting station resources to the Programming and Production Manager.

This position is responsible for organizing and directing the work of the Public Affairs Advisory Board and may represent the station to the public and have the authority to convene post broadcast reviews of Public Affairs productions.

Some challenges the incumbent may encounter include determining the best approach to produce a concept that will convey the message intended; devising production budgets and monitoring expenses to ensure staff and resources are used efficiently; and as chair of the Public Affairs Advisory Board, playing a significant role in designing creative and strategic plans for KUED's public affairs productions. Also, the incumbent must become knowledgeable on production subjects in order to produce programs that communicate all points of view.

The incumbent oversees an operating budget, which may vary from a few hundred dollars to over $100,000 for a project. Every project budget will include a portion of personnel and equipment costs as well as cash out-of-pocket expenses. He/she indirectly supervises up to 15 employees, including the associate producers, production assistants, camera operators, editors, technicians, videographers and tape operators for specific projects.
