Job Title: Associate Producer

Job Summary

Works closely with a Producer to assist in the production of a television program by contributing significantly to the content of a show, and suggesting topics and themes for inclusion in a show. Based on that contribution the Associate Producer should be able to produce that segment (or other segments) for inclusion in a larger show.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, or a related field, or equivalency; two years experience with television studio, field and editing techniques and related equipment required; and familiarity with the regulations pertaining to television broadcasting required. A commitment to provide excellent customer service is also required.

Must have demonstrated skills in research, public relations, writing and the ability to work under deadlines and stressful conditions; a heavy emphasis is placed on writing, producing, sophisticated graphics abilities and editing.

Essential Functions

  1. Collaborates with Producers in the development of program ideas, concepts and recommendations.
  2. Conducts or organizes research for projects. Gathers information from available sources. Organizes and summarizes results in an accurate and reliable form.
  3. May assist in writing scripts or segment scripts in consultation with the Producer. May participate in writing finished scripts.
  4. Makes personal contact with the general public or representatives of government, private agencies, businesses and organizations. Arranges interviews for program material and conducts interviews as necessary.
  5. Gathers, organizes and coordinates scripts, music, props, sets, talent, facilities and other needs for television productions.
  6. May be assigned to produce segments within a larger television program.
  7. Creates graphics as necessary and operates equipment while taping programs.

    Problem Solving

    In coordination with the Producer, the Associate Producer may delegate tasks and set expectations to a Production Assistant. The Associate Producer may coordinate with the Producer or Production Supervisor regarding budgets and expenditures for the production.

    Under the direction of the Producer, the Associate Producer may make decisions such as selecting persons to contact or interview, or material to review.

    Major challenges and problems facing the Associate Producer include: working on multiple assignments at one time; working under production deadlines; and coordinating various elements of a production assigned by the producer. This includes arranging transportation, gathering research material, scheduling appointments, and arranging crew or equipment.

    Comments

    This position may work with more than one project or producer concurrently and is accountable to each producer assigned. The incumbent may be required to work unconventional hours such as nights and weekends. Extended travel to remote locations for interview, production or field work may also be required.
