Job Summary

Coordinates publicity/public relation's activities by disseminating a variety of program information.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications, English, Liberal Arts, or a related area, or equivalency required.

Experience in desktop publishing, word processing, computer networks and web page design preferred. Experience in public relations work or the print news media also preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Writes and supervises the writing of press kits, flyers, public service announcements and feature articles.
  2. Plans and coordinates outreach publicity activities by determining priorities, coordinating volunteer support, advertising and other print materials.
  3. Assists in planning, organizing, and publicizing fundraising and special events.
  4. Acts as department liaison to media representatives.
  5. Meets publication and other deadlines for printed materials.
  6. May give work assignments to non-exempt support staff or student interns.

Problem Solving

The incumbent has the authority to determine the content of written, televised or printed information. He/she also has the authority to determine any outreach activities that will take place.

Key problems facing the incumbent include incorporating the department/University mission into everything that is spoken, written or televised on behalf of the department/University; developing and implementing effective community outreach projects and special events; and disseminating information that will ignite interest or encourage participation.

This position does not have any budget responsibility and supervises staff only indirectly by giving work direction.
