Job Summary

Reviews manuscripts for consistency and style and makes suggestions for improvement, clarity, force and conciseness in keeping with University standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in liberal arts or a related field, or equivalency; two years professional editing experience of three or more scholarly manuscripts; demonstrated oral and written communications skills; and good typing and public relations skills required. A complete understanding of English syntax and all matters of correct grammar; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Reviews and evaluates manuscript looking for placement of tables, charts, photographs, etc. and endeavors to get an overview of the writing style of the author.
  2. Institutes an editing approach by determining the style of writing to use in connection with word usage, capitalization, punctuation, etc.
  3. Enhances the text by adding to or deleting and by making style decision changes as needed. Reviews and edits footnotes and the bibliography making changes as required.
  4. Edits auxiliary elements such as tables, photo captions, and charts, checking for consistency of style between the main text and these auxiliary elements.
  5. Identifies the placement of illustrative material such as tables, photographs and charts within the manuscript for typesetters to follow in typesetting the document.
  6. Communicates changes in the manuscript to the author through telephone contact, galley proofs, etc. ensuring an accurate representation of the author's thoughts.
