Job Summary

Assists in the smooth operation of the ceramics studio by performing standard ceramic studio operations under close supervision. Provides customer service to and shares expertise with students.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Fine Arts or equivalent experience required in studio experience with ceramic studio operations and techniques including kiln firing. Ability to lift heavy objects; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Loads and unloads clay objects from gas and electric kilns.
  2. Uses standard ceramic studio processes to fire kilns to the appropriate temperature and time.
  3. Coordinates kiln firing schedule with instructor, class and student schedules to ensure that pieces are finished on schedule.
  4. Monitors inventory and notifies program instructors when supplies are low.
  5. Notifies program instructors when equipment malfunctions.
  6. Prepares materials for classes as directed.
  7. Assists students during class and lab hours by providing recommendations and expertise.
  8. Coordinates the clearance of student lockers at the semester’s end.
  9. Assists cleaning staff with the deep cleaning of the studio.

    Problem Solving

    The Studio Assistant has the authority to determine inventory needs, mix new glazes, demonstrate different glaze techniques and instruct students in the proper handling of glazes, equipment and raku firings.

    Problems faced by this incumbent include thinking of creative approaches to develop new glazes and their calculating and formulating new glaze recipes. Responsible for maintaining electric and gas kilns, and electric wheels.
