Job Summary

Supervises the Transportation Department and its employees in providing moving services, clean-up, trash collection, road and parking lot construction and maintenance, snow removal and a variety of other services necessary for the University community.

Qualifications

A valid Utah's Commercial Drivers License; five years progressively more responsible experience in a transportation department, or the equivalency; a construction background in roads and parking lots; and demonstrated oral and written communications and customer service skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervise and implements snow removal plan to remove built up snow from roadways and parking lots in a timely manner to provide access to the campus and medical centers.
  2. Audits purchase requisitions and reviews budget reports insuring that needed supplies are ordered, received and paid for within the budget guidelines.
  3. Schedules daily workload insuring the work is prioritized and that work is completed expediently.
  4. Estimates costs of construction projects such as grading, excavation, asphalt work and other construction services.
  5. Estimates the costs for moving projects and schedules appropriate manpower to complete approved moves.
  6. Oversees the collection of refuse on campus and the disposal of the refuse at an approved off campus location.
  7. Oversees the scheduled maintenance of all of Transportation's vehicles and equipment.
  8. Oversees the Transportation Department by hiring, training, firing and making salary decisions, performing performance appraisals, and making work assignments to the Transportation Department personnel.
  9. Reviews new facility and remodeling plans, inspects projects, and creates punch lists for project completion assuring that doorways and hallways are compatible with University moving requirements.
  10. Inspects new buildings and grounds before the building is turned over to the University to insure that the work has been done according to specifications.
  11. Plans with each crew leader in setting up a functional Transportation Department organization and assigning realistic objectives to each area so that high maintenance standards can be met with a minimum expenditure of manpower.
  12. Controls the Transportation Department budget by recommending the budget amounts required for snow removal, moving, and construction, and by closely directing expenditures so that the amounts allowed for salaries, wages, supplies, and equipment are properly prioritized which will allow Transportation Department objectives to be met with the available funds.

    Problem Solving

    The incumbent has authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. He/she also has the authority to hire, fire, train and make salary decisions on employees assigned to the Transportation Department and to prioritize and make work assignments.

    The most frequent problems encountered in this position include scheduling personnel for snow removal on holidays; coordinating with departments on the moving of furniture or equipment, particularly when not all the information is given; and in maintaining a fleet of trucks that, due to budgetary restraints, may become aged.

    Comments

    This position requires that the incumbent periodically work irregular hours on special assignments and sometimes during adverse weather conditions.
