Job Summary

Lubricates, changes oil, and repairs tires by selecting proper tools, equipment and lubricants to assist in maintaining vehicles and pieces of equipment that Motor Pool is contracted to service.

Qualifications

One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an approved 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program in Automobile Mechanics, or 4 years equivalent shop experience; certification by the State Highway Patrol to perform safety inspections or receive certification within six months of employment; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Lubricates a variety of vehicles and equipment by using power lifts, pneumatic and hand grease guns, and selecting appropriate lubricants and greases to insure long service and ease in operation of equipment.
  2. Changes oil and checks oil levels by removing and replacing filters, using knowledge of correct filters as well as proper capacity to insure continued operation of University vehicles and equipment.
  3. Services tires for all University vehicles by inspecting, removing and replacing, dismantling from the rim, patching tubes and plugging tubeless tires, using power tire changer, power tube submerger, spin balancer, bubble balancer, as well as assorted hand tools in order to complete work as directed through work orders.
  4. Contacts customers regarding tire problems such as unusual wear to determine appropriate action to be taken.
  5. Operates and inspects all pieces of equipment to insure adequate operation as relates to lubricated parts. This includes all hydraulic systems found on equipment such as garbage trucks and dump trucks.
  6. Performs state safety inspections according to standard procedures and corrects deficiencies by replacing light bulbs, headlights, tires, wiper blades, and other assorted equipment to insure compliance with state inspection laws.
  7. Maintains a record of all lubrication work on 450 vehicles to provide information on quantity and dates that work was performed.
  8. Keeps supervisor informed of material inventory needs.
  9. May replace mufflers using pneumatic hand chisel and pipe clamps to hold new muffler in place.
  10. May act as a leadworker to part-time helpers as needed.

    Comments

    The incumbent is accountable for knowing all lubrication requirements of vehicles and equipment including hydraulic systems, where and how to apply lubricants, as well as tire information for all vehicles services by the Motor Pool.
