Job Summary

Performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks on the journeyman level in maintaining, servicing, and repairing all manner of diesel, heavy duty, and related mechanical equipment. Ensures maximum use and operation from University vehicles through proper service and repair.

Qualifications

One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an approved 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program in Automobile Mechanics; and four years of shop experience, two of which are in diesel repair or equivalency; and certification by the State Highway Patrol to perform safety inspections on vehicles, heavy equipment and buses, and by the county to perform emission testing on vehicles, heavy equipment and buses or receive certification within six months of hire required. Licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency to diagnose and repair air conditioning units using the freon recovery system; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with others also required.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in Diesel repair preferred.

Certification for state inspection is accomplished by passing a written test administered by the Utah State Highway Patrol. Certification for emmissions is accomplished by completing a 40 hr course and passing of a test using University equipment. Licensing for freon recovery system requires completion of a one day class and passing grade on the written test.

Essential Functions

1. Checks entire diesel engine functions, brake systems, electrical, fuel, and other mechanical systems by using diagnostic equipment and previous knowledge and experience to determine causes of malfunctions and repairs to be performed.
2. Performs state safety inspections and county emissions tests on vehicles, trucks and buses as required by law.
3. Handles assorted maintenance duties as assigned or directed by applying the suitable method in timing and tuning both gas and diesel engines, adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems, relining and replacing both air and hydraulic brakes, replacing oil filters, as well as adjusting and replacing tappets, and other such parts.
4. Services and repairs vehicles by testing for and correcting faulty alignment of wheels, axles, and steering mechanisms, including wheel balancing, shock absorbers, springs, and other related parts.
5. May assist Technician I's and Technician II's or other subordinate personnel by answering questions, making suggestions, or illustrating proper repair procedures in helping less experienced workers to learn and benefit from the incumbent's experience.
6. Dismantles and disassembles different units by breaking them down into component parts (e.g. pistons, bearings, gears, etc.) as necessary to inspect and examine for excessive wear or defects.
7. Overhauls clutches, brakes, steering, and other assemblies by repairing, replacing, and applying appropriate procedures and techniques.

Comments

The job requires considerable knowledge of the procedures, hazards, and safety practices applicable in making mechanical and electrical repairs. Skill in the use of automotive mechanic tools and acetylene and electric arc welding equipment is also important.

This position also requires knowledge of and maintenance of the diesel bus fleet with the accompanying records and schedules. The incumbent needs to maintain contact with the manufacturer on any updates or changes that are introduced.

Occasionally, the incumbent may be called to operate the wrecker in retrieving stalled or disabled vehicles.

Incumbents must be recertified each year for state inspection and emmissions testing.
