Job Title: Sign Maker

Job Summary

Designs, sizes, and produces signs for the University to notify people of buildings, room numbers, restroom locations, etc and to assist in enforcement of the law such as no smoking, no parking, handicap parking, etc.

Qualifications

Three years professional painting experience, or equivalency; two years of sign making experience using computer programs and engraving equipment; demonstrated customer services skills; and oral and written communications skills required.

Essential Functions

  1. Estimates costs of sign to be made by first sizing the sign and then determining material to be used and how much labor it will take to product the sign.
  2. Orders materials needed to produce signs from a local vendor with delivery scheduled for the same day if materials are in stock.
  3. Lays out sign by entering the dimensions of the sign, the type and size of the lettering, any art designs etc. into the engraving computer.
  4. Sets plastic blanks in machine in preparation of engraving and starts computer procedures to produce signs.
  5. Lays out and cuts out vinyl letters for those signs requiring that the use of vinyl lettering.
  6. Applies cut out vinyl letters to appropriate sign backing and prepares sign for installation.
  7. Prepares signs for hanging by drilling holes in the appropriate locations on the sign.
  8. Installs signs on walls, doors, or hangs signs in various locations according to the department's needs.
  9. May be assigned duties of a painter on an as needed basis.

    Comments

    The incumbent must be familiar with safety practices and procedures due to exposure to certain hazardous conditions and situations, such as explosive and flammable paints and thinners, and work on tall ladders or high scaffolding.

    The incumbent must be well versed in the use of a personal computer, Dahlgren 300 Engraver, Design Cad 2 D Grafix Maker, Gerber Signer Vinyl Letter Cutting Machine.
