Job Summary

Performs a variety of duties throughout the campus requiring advanced skill and training in cement finishing, brick masonry, plastering and rock work by applying recognized procedures and techniques.

Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in masonry or four years professional masonry experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required.

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions

  1. Lays brick, cement blocks, natural stone, tile and other related materials by applying unique trade skills in carrying out specific job duties.
  2. Processes, smoothes and shapes the surface of freshly poured concrete by using a variety of hand and power tools in completing cement work as needed by various departments on campus.
  3. Performs structural and repair work with plaster by applying both preliminary and finish surfaces in accomplishing work assignments for other University departments.
  4. Operates a variety of masonry hand and power tools such as carbide tip drills, jack hammers, compressors, diamond saws and other related equipment as essential to the performance of specific jobs.
  5. Applies sheet rock, plaster board and other related materials and performs the various procedures necessary to prepare the surface for painting.
  6. Erects scaffolding as necessary to facilitate work at high levels.
  7. Constructs forms as essential for use in concrete work.
  8. Ensures that all concrete and brick work is done in accordance with accepted masonry procedures and University policies.
  9. Provides assistance to other trades areas needing concrete or cement work done to insure the project is completed on time.

Problem Solving

Incumbents operate with very little direct supervision. They may function as a lead worker or crew leader on specific assignments by supervising and instructing personnel of a lower or similar classification. Independent judgment is used in choosing materials, tools and procedures in finishing assigned tasks.

Comments

The incumbent must be aware of safety at all times due to the possibility of serious injury from power equipment or on repair sites. The incumbent should also possess hand tools for use in this position. This position is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies as needed.
