Job Title: Spv, Telecom Instal and Repair

Job Summary

Supervisies and coordinates activites of the technicians engaged in installing and repairing the telecommunications equipment and cable.

Qualifications

Five years experience installing and repairing business phone systems or equivalencyrequired, with at lest two of those years in a supervisory capacity. Knowledge of programming phone systems and diagnosing defects in telephone equipment are skills necessary to this position. Knowledge of structured cabling and fiber optic systems required.

Experience with electronic key systems, wire distribution, 1A2 electromechanical key systems, hybrid key systems, and PABX equipment preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Manages the Installation and Repair section of NetCom; planning, organizing, and supervising the work requested from university departments.
  2. Receives work orders from the NetCom service coordinators, assigns the technicians and determines the type of tools and material needed for the repair or installation.
  3. DIrects and assists Technicians in installing and repairng communication equipment, such as telephone circuts, electronic key systems and other electromechanical key systems, fiber optics, structured cabling systems, and data transport systems.
  4. Inspects the completed installation or repair by the technicians.
  5. Compiles reports at the end of the day including installations and repairs completed, location, materials used and number of worker-hours required foreach job. Also tracks all cable test results.
  6. Coordinates and schedules technicians for weekend and after hours "on call", which may include special university activities (football and basketball games).
  7. Makes recommendations when outside contracting help is needed.
  8. Tracks and monitors employees in the NetCom Skill Based Pay program.
  9. Conducts annual reviews for employees that report to this position.

Problem Solving

The incumbent provides input regarding hiring/firing matters to the manager of physical engineering, and has the authority to determine appropirate action to resolve technical problems that may arise. The incumbent also determines work order priority and technician assignments. Incumbent may make purchases as required to complete jobs.

Comments

Because of the warranty clauses imposed by some manufacturers of telecommunication equipment, the incumbent is required to become certified by attending classes in the use of the equipment.
