Job Summary
Supervises the maintenance, operation and repair of mechanical equipment in all University buildings including air handling, secondary heating, maintenance and repair of all air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and related equipment for human comfort and scientific experimental needs.
Qualifications
A minimum of five years of responsible repair experience with mechanical and HVAC systems or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a demonstrated knowledge of electricity, plumbing and air conditioning; and the ability to read, understand and follow repair manuals required. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills and troubleshooting skills; customer service skills; and a strong commitment to the concept of excellence in service also required. Prior supervisory experience is preferred, but not required.

Essential Functions
Problem Solving
The incumbent has the authority to make on-the-spot decisions on the proper methods of repairing the mechanical equipment in order to keep down-time to a minimum. He/she also has the authority to expend funds from assigned budgets to make necessary repairs in order to keep the mechanical equipment operational. The position also makes hiring, firing, and salary decisions on employees assigned to the shop, after making appropriate contact with the Director of Campus Utility Services, and conducting annual performance appraisals as per University polices and procedures.
Challenges encountered in this position may include keeping HVAC systems running, and handling major breakdowns while assuring occupants comfort.
