Job Title: Spv, Plumbing Shop

Job Summary

Supervises the operation and maintenance of all plumbing facilities throughout the University. Ensures the proper, safe, and efficient completion of work to provide water, waste disposal system, natural gas, air, and other gases and liquids required by the University community.

Qualifications

Licensed as a Journeyman Plumber; five years of previous plumbing experience; demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and oral and written communications skills; and demonstrated customer services skills required. The incumbent may be requested to obtain a Backflow Preventors license, and a Utah Water Operator's license. Previous supervisory and budgeting experience is helpful.

The journeyman license is obtained through the completion of a comprehensive examination after the completion of a 4 year 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program.

The Backflow Preventors license is obtained by the successful completion of a comprehensive examination after the completion of a intensive one week course.

The Water Operators license is obtained by the successful completion of a comprehensive examination after the completion of one year of correspondence courses and classroom work.

Essential Functions

  1. Reviews incoming projects daily and assigns them to plumbers with expertise in that specific area.
  2. Schedules preventive maintenance on plumbing systems to include all water, gas, waste disposal, and storm sewers and all plumbing fixtures.
  3. Maintains the cross connect program and ensures that the 500+ backflow valves are tested annually and reports are submitted to the Health Department and the Water Department.
  4. Reviews and completes time sheets and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  5. Maintains records of materials charges and ensures that materials used on the job are charged out accurately.
  6. Orders replacement and repair parts, working with the Materials Shop on receiving parts needed, to repair plumbing fixtures and lines.
  7. Oversees the design, fabrication, and construction of specialized plumbing needed for research.
  8. Prepares reports for supervisor on plumbing equipment and lines needing major repairs or replacement.
  9. Responds to complaints from campus personnel concerning plumbing malfunctions, shop personnel or emergency situations.
  10. Reviews plans for remodeling, new construction and plumbing requests to assure that plumbing specifications are adequate for the use attended.
  11. Ensures that all apprentice plumbers receive the well-rounded training required by the Apprenticeship Program by scheduling the apprentices on the required types and hours of work.
  12. Maintains a current and updated master map of the water, gas, waste disposal and storm sewer distribution systems.
  13. Keeps shop expenditures within the authorized shop budget.

Problem Solving

The incumbent has authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. He/she also has the authority to hire, fire, train and make salary decisions on employees assigned to the Plumbing Shop, and to prioritize and make work assignments.

Problems encountered in this position include emergency utilities outages that may affect the whole campus.
