Job Summary

Supervises the operation and maintenance of Carpenters, Masons, Roofers, and helpers engaged in construction, maintenance, and repair of building equipment, structures, and walks to ensure proper and efficient completion of the work assigned.

Qualifications

Licensing as a Journeyman in a related trade or equivalent; five years of previous related trade experience; and previous supervisory and budgeting experience required. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills, analytical, and trouble shooting skills; and demonstrated customer services skills also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Schedules daily work load insuring the work is prioritized and that work is completed expediently.
  2. Schedules repairs of roofing for preventive maintenance by notifying areas affected of time and duration of repairs.
  3. Reviews new facility and remodeling plans, inspects projects, and creates punch lists for project completion assuring carpentry compatibility of finished wood work and roofing.
  4. Orders replacement and repair parts and supplies, working with the Materials Shop on receiving materials needed, to make needed repairs to roofs and buildings.
  5. Audits purchase requisitions and reviews budget reports insuring that needed supplies are ordered, received and paid for within the budget guidelines.
  6. Oversees the design, fabrication, and construction of cabinets and other wood items needed by campus departments.
  7. Analyzes technical problems with roofs, sidewalks, and buildings and makes decisions on how best to accomplish the repairs.
  8. Attends bi-weekly staff meetings with the director to review problem areas, budget matters, review progress of repairs etc.
  9. Oversees the Carpenter Shop by hiring, training, firing and making salary decisions, performing performance appraisals, and making work assignments to the Carpenter Shop personnel.
  10. Reviews and completes time sheets and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  11. Ensures that all carpentry and roofing work meets the requirements of the Utah State Building Code by supervising, reviewing, and controlling all carpentry and roofing projects in process at the University.
  12. Provides a well rounded training program for apprentice carpenters ensuring that they meet all requirements set forth by the Apprenticeship Standards Committee.
  13. Ensures that the shop expenditures are maintained within the authorized shop budget.

Problem Solving

The most frequent problems encountered in this position include maintaining the roofs for over 250 buildings with no two roofs being the same. Also, trying to match cabinets in departments that may be old and need replacing is made difficult when the wood needed to match is expensive or cannot be found.

This position is given authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. He/she also has the authority to hire, fire, train and make salary decisions on employees assigned to the Carpenter Shop and to prioritize and make work assignments.
