Job Summary

Installs, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all door closures, window latches and related hardware and all restroom door hardware and partitions.

Qualifications

Journeyman carpenter and two years direct experience in doors and door closures; strong mechanical abilities; and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve situations with doors and closures required. Demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with others are also required.

Certification to rebuild door closures, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of employ in the position preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Repairs, services, and installs hydraulic door closures using machine and hand tools.
  2. Disassembles closures using handtools and vise and immerses parts in cleaning solution to clean parts.
  3. Removes encrusted dirt and rust using electric rotary wire brush and grinding wheel.
  4. Replaces worn or broken parts through in house inventory.
  5. Works with other trades people in the design, fabrication of parts or assemblies as needed.
  6. Fills oil chamber and packs spindle with leather washers.
  7. Paints finished door closer and installs back on door.
  8. Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, etc.
  9. May repair window frames with counter balanced window sashes by pulling the window out and repairing or replacing the counter balancing mechanism and replacing the window.
  10. Repairs overhead sectional doors by unloading the counter balancing springs, disassembling the door, repair or replacing broken parts, assembling the door, and rewinding the spring.
  11. Repairs fire doors, closures, and the magnetic door holders used for holding the doors in an open position.
  12. Repairs and maintains handicap entrances in conformance with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
  13. Responds to calls about broken doors and secures area with wood until repairs can be made.
  14. Installs and repairs restroom doors and partitions and associated hardware.
  15. Consults with Campus Design and Construction on new building installations and renovations of existing buildings of doors and door closures.

    Problem Solving

    Incumbents operate with very little direct supervision. May function as a leadworker or crew leader on specific assignments, by supervising and instructing personnel of a lower or similar classification. Independent judgement is used in choosing materials, tools and procedures in finishing assigned tasks.

    Comments

    The incumbent must be aware of safety at all times due to possibility of serious injury from power equipment or on repair sites. The incumbent should also possess hand tools for use in this position. This position is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies as needed.

    The individual must be very reliable and punctual with all repairs, as security is usually a great factor in dealing with doors, door closures, hardware, etc.
