Job Summary

Designs, engineers, and coordinates projects. Obtains cost estimates, schedules projects and staff, and installs and maintains a wide assortment of sophisticated electronic and audio equipment/systems. Supervises shop personnel and directing the activities of the Electronics Shop to ensure that electronic equipment is utilized effectively and efficiently.

Qualifications

Associate degree in Electronics, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); five years of electronics repair and design experience; previous supervisory and budgeting experience; demonstrated knowledge of Motorola equipment; and demonstrated trouble shooting, analytic, human relation and effective communication skills required.

A valid FCC license and NABER certification may be preferred.

Essential Functions

1. Responsible for all FCC licenses pertaining to communications equipment in use by Maintenance and Operations shops, Public Safety, Parking Services, Geological Survey, Telecommunications, University Student Apartments, Food Services, and the College of Mines and Mineral Industries.
2. Renews licenses before expiration and ensures that all equipment and licenses conform to FCC rules, regulations, and requirements.
3. Oversees operation status for all logiplex systems including fire alarms, hold up alarms, automated building closures, etc.
4. Supervises the design and engineering of burglar and holdup alarms and surveillance systems.
5. Supervises the design, engineering, and installation of telemetry systems for water pump houses and reservoirs.
6. Designs, engineers, and oversees the installation of audio systems in campus buildings; operates systems as needed.
7. Researches and obtains cost estimates for a large variety of electronic systems as required by the needs of the University; provides cost estimates to department administrators.
8. Controls and oversees use of all campus communications ducts and systems on campus.
9. Designs, engineers, and oversees the installation of computer network systems for campus departments.
10. Oversees the repair and maintenance of the master clock, the clock systems and generators, and the classroom bell systems.
11. Oversees the repair of electronic equipment for campus departments such as AM/FM radios, VCR's, T.V.'s, cassette recorders, record players, CD units, etc.
12. Supervises the repair and installation of specialized electronic controls, centrifuges, electronic door locks, door raisers, and specialized electronic lab equipment.
13. Performs personnel functions for the Electronics Shop which includes hiring, training, terminating, making salary decisions, performing performance evaluations, and making work assignments to shop personnel.
14. Supervises the repair of specialized medical equipment.
15. Serves as a consultant to engineers, department administrators, and fire and police officials in design planning and security matters.
16. Serves as a liaison with organizations/individuals outside the University using campus facilities for productions and performance; assists in designing, engineering, and installing various electronic systems as required.

Problem Solving

This position has the authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. The supervisor has the authority to perform departmental personnel functions such as hiring, terminating, training, and making salary decisions on employees assigned to the Electronics Shop.

Representative challenges encountered by the incumbent include performing the acoustical room analysis necessary to properly install an audio system. The incumbent designs, engineers, troubleshoots, and repairs electronic equipment and systems. Additionally, the supervisor designs and installs computer network systems.
