Job Summary

Provides for the design, engineering, programming, testing, installation, fabrication, operation and maintenance of advanced computer based security and CCTV systems. These systems are used campus wide, in Research Park and other University property in or out of the state.

Qualifications

Associate degree in Electronics, Computer Science, Television Science, or a related field or equivalency; plus four years experience with C-Cure systems or equivalency required.

A broad background consisting of television systems of high industrial or broadcast quality; telecommunications systems, including telephone, microwave, satellite, coax, and broadband systems; computer systems including UNIX NetWare, DOS, batch files, PC hardware, software, and tape back-up systems; programming within Unix Shell as well as all aspects of networking and network security; and security systems including analog, digital encryption, multiplexing, access systems, card scan & proximity also required.

Must have a strong ability to deal with people, both internal to the University community with external contacts, including engineers, consultants, and sales personnel. The ability to work under pressure of multifaceted requirements imposed by academic and engineering staff and accomplish objectives with a minimum of supervision; and demonstrated effective communication and human relation skills are also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Installs, operates and maintains a very specialized computer based security system, capable of detecting intrusion alarms, fire alarms, emergency/rape phone stations, elevator emergency phone, card access and other functions as dictated by campus needs.
  2. Works with Campus Planning, Engineering & Design, Hospital Engineering, academic and research departments, Public Safety and Fire Marshal, to evaluate, update, design, and engineer security, card access, fire, and CCTV systems appropriate for the security level needed, and to meet current University standards.
  3. Selects the appropriate hardware, software and other components needed for the engineered system. Coordinates the purchasing of equipment and supplies to meet project schedules.
  4. Designs and/or fabricates specialized electronic circuits or assemblies, and special metal or wood housings as dictated by the system needs.
  5. Supervises the programming of the Host computer and the on site microprocessor including hardware, software, user accounts, and network security. Assures that all software is operating properly on the Host and remote access microprocessors.
  6. Utilizes a wide variety of electronic test equipment such as: oscilloscopes, TDR, voltohm meter, VTVM, signal generators, real time spectrum analyzers, frequency meters, along with specialized hand/machine tools.
  7. Tests the system using both standard and complex devices and equipment to collect data. Evaluates and analyzes collected data for proper operation as set forth by U.L. laboratories, and University standards.
  8. Updates accurate records of preventative operating schedules including the time and materials used to make repairs to the equipment.
  9. Makes recommendation as to improvements of preventative operating schedules including servicing techniques to the Supervisor, Electronics Shop.
  10. Acts as project leader by training and providing work direction and guidance to other technicians as designed.
  11. Oversees the daily operation of the Host Computer and provides training for operators and data entry personnel.
  12. Maintains all security and CCTV equipment on a preventative maintenance schedule.
  13. Maintains accurate records of preventative maintenance, programmed data, historical data and equipment used.
  14. Makes recommendation to improve system and preventative maintenance schedules for new equipment.
  15. Responds to questions from users and provides training for all levels of University administration, faculty, staff and students to address security issues.
  16. Coordinates the set-up and execution of telephone links between departmental alarm systems and the main Host computer system.
  17. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. Reorders according to established departmental guidelines.

Problem Solving

The technician has full authority for C-Cure projects assigned by taking them from conception through final installation, testing and maintenance. He/she has the authority to prioritize his/her time within departmental guidelines.

The incumbent will be exposed to problems that are new to the electronic security field and he/she will be on the leading edge in identifying and solving these problems.

Comments

This position is designed for campus wide use and the incumbent may work in assignments where security, and CCTV equipment may be located for specialized applications. Incumbents in the position must be able to pass a full background investigation by the appropriate police agency and may be reinvestigated at any time. Failure to pass the background investigation at any time is cause for termination.

The incumbent must be available for twenty-four (24) hour emergency service on critical equipment.
