Job Title: Spv, Machine/Metal Shop

Job Summary

Supervises personnel in the Machine/Metals Shop in the design, layout, fabrication, building and repairing of equipment, furniture, etc. Ensures the shop is running smoothly and effectively in meeting maintenance and construction needs of the University.

Qualifications

Five years of previous sheet metal work, machining and welding experience; previous supervisory and budgeting experience required. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, analytical, and troubleshooting skills; and demonstrated customer services skills also required.

Essential Functions

  1. Schedules daily work load insuring the work is prioritized and that work is completed expediently.
  2. Orders replacement and repair parts and supplies, working with the Materials Shop on receiving parts needed, to make needed repairs to equipment and metal parts.
  3. Audits purchase requisitions and reviews budget reports insuring that needed supplies are ordered, received and paid for within the budget guidelines.
  4. Oversees the design, fabrication, and construction of equipment and other metal items needed by campus departments.
  5. Analyzes technical problems with machining, sheet metal, and welding projects and makes decisions on how best to accomplish the repairs.
  6. Attends bi-weekly staff meetings with the director to review problem areas, budget matters, review progress of repairs etc.
  7. Oversees the Machine/Metal Shop by hiring, training, firing and making salary decisions, performing performance appraisals, and making work assignments to the Machine/Metal Shop personnel.
  8. Reviews and completes time sheets and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  9. Ensures that all apprentice Sheet Metal Workers receive the well-rounded training required by the Apprenticeship Program by scheduling the apprentices on the required types and hours of work.
  10. Ensures that all machining and metal work meets the requirements of the University by supervising, reviewing and controlling all machining/metal projects in process on the University campus.
  11. Insures that the shop expenditures are maintained within the authorized shop budget.

Problem Solving

This position is given authority to make expenditures from his/her authorized assigned budget within the guidelines of University policy. He/she also has the authority to hire, fire, train and make salary decisions on employees assigned to the Machine/Metal Shop and to prioritize and make work assignments.

Challenges encountered in this position include the coordination between the shop and the Purchasing Department in ordering and receiving materials needed for specific projects; the coordination of work projects with departments on campus and receiving needed paperwork authorizing the work; and the coordination of the paperwork flow between the shop and the Work Planning Section.
