Supervises the general maintenance, cleaning, and setups for special events, and other special requests made by the Athletic Department Heads for either the Huntsman Center, the Eccles Tennis Center, the Athletic Support Facility, and the Library Storage Facility, or other departments on campus. Functions as a working crew leader.

Qualifications

Two years custodial experience; one year previous experience in portable stage construction and set up experience; and demonstrated oral and written communications skills along with customer service skills required.

Previous supervisory experience, and some knowledge in carpentry, electronics, etc., preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Sets up stages, spotlights, chairs, tables, platforms, stage lighting, basketball standards, and other equipment as required for special events by following directions from Supervisor, Special Services, Athletic Directors, or road managers, and by supervising the work of the Special Service crew so that all physical arrangements for each event may be completed prior to each event.
  2. Coordinates with other shops to keeps mechanical, lighting, seating and restroom fixtures in good condition by ordering services from appropriate shops when specialized assistance is needed so that all equipment and fixtures operate properly in the buildings where special events are being held.
  3. Provides services during special events as requested by directors and coaches, by personally attending to or supervising the crews in doing the work that may be related to sound, lighting, repairs, special construction, or cleanup so that all physical and environmental details that are needed or requested for each event may be attended to.
  4. Keeps the Huntsman Center, Eccles Tennis Center, Athletic Support Facility and the Library Storage Facility offices, concourses, restrooms, and windows clean by supervising and working with 10 full-time and up to 10 part-time workers so that the appearance and cleanliness of the buildings will be kept at a high standard.
  5. Assists in arranging for all physical needs, tables, chairs, carpets, canopies, and podiums, for all convocations in six different buildings on campus. Assists in the physical setup needed for 5,000+ people for buffet luncheon on the library plaza.
  6. Lays out and stripes playing fields for athletic events and practices.
  7. Assists in the repair of the astro-turf in the stadium when required.
  8. Fills in for the Supervisor, Special Services when he/she is absent or when dual coverage is needed during peak activity periods. Ensures that all athletic events held in the Huntsman Center, Rice Stadium, and the Eccles Tennis Facility are set in accordance with NCAA standards.
  9. Provides assistance to University departments needing special set ups for events, insuring that the events are run smoothly and without problems.
  10. Provides work supervision to Maintenance and Set Up Worker positions insuring that harmony is maintained and projects completed.

    Problem Solving

    This position is given the authority to prioritize and make work assignments to employees under his/her supervision in order to accomplish the assigned work. The incumbent supervises 10 full-time and up to ten part-time non-exempt employees.

    Comments

    This not an 8:00 to 5:00 job but very often requires long or irregular hours, depending upon the needs of each special event. The responsibility is to follow through on the implementation of maintenance and special events setups as outlined by the Supervisor, Special Services.
