University of Utah Job Description
Coordinates the planning, designing, and construction of campus and hospital facilities to ensure that all new construction and alterations comply with University standards, local and national building codes, and departmental requirements.
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated written and oral communication skills; and demonstrated interpersonal skills required. A current licensure with the State of Utah as a Architect preferred.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.
This position has the authority to make decisions affecting the scope of the project in its development stages. The incumbent also makes design and material selection decisions satisfying the program and the client. This position represents the University in the programming and development of construction and makes decisions in the construction process which best represents the Universities interest.
Major problems encountered in this position are the development of a comprehensive job scope and appropriate program for the various client requests. This can be difficult because of existing structures to be removed or worked around prior to construction, or maintaining a construction budget and schedule while fulfilling the client's construction needs. The construction project also has to meet State and Federal Regulations relating to safety requirements. By meeting these requirements, the construction project may go over budget and completion schedules. The Coordinator often times has to coordinate thirty projects at once. This can pose difficulty for the Coordinator because of the time constraints and the individual needs of each project all coming together at the same time.
Generally, the coordinator may be responsible for approximately ten to forty projects annually depending on the size and complexity of the project. This position may provide work direction to a various number of drafting technicians.
The incumbent should be able to demonstrate competency in interior design and space planning and have knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical design, and building codes. For hospital positions, experience in renovation of medical and research facilities preferred.
