University of Utah Job Description
Collects and processes radioactive wastes in accordance with University procedures, state and federal regulations and licenses. Prepares and maintains procedures and records pertaining to the safe handling and disposal of radioactive wastes.
Two years of college education in the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Excellent driving record and the ability to obtain a valid Utah commercial driver's license with a hazardous materials endorsement within three months of the date of hire. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of employment. Basic computer skills. High degree of self-direction and reliable performance without direct supervision, demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
According to federal regulations, the incumbent must pass a physical exam and written test that is paid for by the Department of Radiological Health.
Prior experience in a radiation safety related position preferred.

The incumbent must be able to convert scientific measurements to various systems of units; understand scientific notation; evaluate waste packages for unacceptable materials according to procedures, and based on this, accept or reject the removal of the package from the laboratory.
The work environment involves exposure to packages containing hazardous wastes, which require following basic safety precautions. This position requires heavy physical work—moving packages weighing up to 40 lbs. and manipulating drums weighing up to 400 lbs. Incumbents may be required to wear appropriate protective gear.
