Job Summary

This position is responsible for acting as a primary health advisor to the community, providing the full range of needs assessment, patient care planning, and performance of routine and emergency procedures for patients, including handling of life threatening complications for mother and infant. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current licensure to practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife in the State of Utah.
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association, or obtain within one month of hire, as determined by credentialing.

Preferred

  • Utah State prescriptive privileges.
  • National certification as a Nurse Midwife.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions

  1. Administers controlled drugs, intravenous solutions, antibiotics, and other agents used to treat medical problems.
  2. Anticipates and recognizes deviations from normal infant deliveries and institutes procedures designed to safeguard the well-being of mothers and babies, such as resuscitation of newborns, treatment of hemorrhage and shock, fetal distress, prolapsed cord, and other life threatening conditions.
  3. Performs spontaneous vaginal deliveries and episiotomies and consults with a physician when complications occur.
  4. Develops, implements, and evaluates broad program goals, objectives, and standards for the provision of health care to childbearing families.
  5. Designs and participates in research that is relevant to health care needs of patients, their families, and the community.
  6. Teaches prenatal classes for expectant parents to help ensure the safe pregnancy and delivery of the patients.
  7. Manages the care of newborns and infants by providing comprehensive primary health care maintenance through home visits or clinic consultation.
  8. Records the patient's medical, obstetrical, family, socioeconomic, and dietary history in order to monitor the progress of patient's health status.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
