Job Summary

This position serves as the technical expert in occupational safety and conducts safety analyses related to the construction and operations/maintenance of facilities. Specialists provide expert advice to management regarding safety performance and the status of health safety programs.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a life science, safety engineering, or occupational safety and health related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), AND three years professional experience in occupational safety. Knowledge of government regulations, professional association recommendations, consensus standards, safety analysis, and cost control principles is also required.

Experience delivering health and safety service in a higher education environment is preferred.

Essential Functions

1. Conducts safety analyses
2. Interprets and applies federal, state, and local occupational safety regulations and standards
3. Reviews architectural and engineering plans to ensure the health and safety of new and remodeled structures
4. Implements control measures for working with hazardous equipment
5. Investigates accidents to identify causes and to determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future
6. Collects samples of hazardous materials and performs occupational and environmental exposure assessments
7. Determines legal sufficiency of data to meet demands of regulatory record-keeping requirements
8. Investigates cases of work-related injury, illness, or death
9. Conducts safety training and education programs and develops presentation materials
10. Prepares budget projections for the General Safety Manager
11. Supervises a team of Technical Assistants

Comments

This position involves working on-call rotations after business hours, weekends, and holidays in order to respond to emergencies.
