Job Summary

Serves as Telecommunications' technical advisor in providing to the University community information regarding the most economical and efficient phone system for their area.

Qualifications

Two years experience in telecommunications or a related field, or equivalency; demonstrated written and oral communications skills; the ability to work with all levels of personnel; a commitment to service excellence; and have demonstrated customer service skills also required. Experience working with computer based ordering and accounting systems is preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides technical advice to campus and hospital departments regarding phone system selection that is the most economical and efficient method for their area.
  2. Orders phone equipment and reserves phone lines for campus and hospital departments.
  3. Monitors department equipment billings to ensure the amount charged is accurate and that the costs are recovered by Telecommunications through department billings.
  4. Updates the long distance computer program for changes or additions to remote access numbers for long distance calls off campus.
  5. Changes campus extensions to restrict or allow long distance access
  6. Restricts or allows students to make long distance calls from their telephones in Student Housing.
  7. Receives incoming change requests from campus and hospital departments, generates work orders, orders equipment, coordinates system training, and coordinates installation by the telecommunication technicians and/or appropriate outside vendors if necessary.
  8. Issues phone service long distance credit cards for University personnel in order to provide long distance services for off campus calls.
  9. Accesses U.S. West central office switch to program sets and line features. Accesses Phonemail system to establish new phonemail service or make changes to existing service.
  10. Provides backup to the other specialist by answering questions, taking calls, generating work orders, etc., in their absence.
  11. Ensures campus and hospital departments receive the best communications equipment to meet their needs at the lowest cost possible.
  12. Ensures long distance information and equipment are accurate and properly billed to the departments.

Problem Solving

The incumbent has the authority to recommend the best phone system at the lowest cost possible to meet the needs of the department. Complex problems or unique situations that develop are generally coordinated with the Telecommunications Consultant and the Administrator of Telecommunications Business Affairs.

The major problem encountered in this position is determining what type of telephone system should be installed that best meets the needs and budget of the department.
