Job Summary

Provides support in text, educational supplies, and general merchandise areas by overseeing, organizing, supervising, coordinating and assisting in the delivery of services.

Qualifications

Three years of retail sales experience with one year of experience supervising employees and buying merchandise; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Associate’s degree in Business, or a related field, or two years of related college work along with the above experience requirements is preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.

Essential Functions

  1. Performs the buyer function for a specific area of responsibility by considering inventory levels, customer preferences, contacting vendors and placing orders to obtain merchandise.
  2. Meets with vendors to obtain a working knowledge of product lines, prices, availability and delivery dates to ensure quality products at reasonable terms.
  3. Supervises staff by hiring, training, delegating tasks and giving performance reviews to ensure a competent work force.
  4. Monitors stock levels and maintains inventory control systems to provide information for effective and timely buying decisions.
  5. Oversees the selling floor and assists customers with buying decisions by locating requested merchandise, preparing special orders and resolving customer problems and complaints.
  6. Displays merchandise and recommends sale and promotional items to ensure the most favorable product mix and presentation.
  7. Monitors customer-buying patterns to determine recommendations for additions and deletions of specific items and lines of merchandise to continually improve service and meet customer needs.

    Problem Solving

    The incumbent has the authority to determine merchandise needs and place orders. He/she may give input in the preparation of the annual budget.

    Challenges for the incumbent include resolving problems found when the wrong merchandise, the wrong amount or defective merchandise is received or when a cost difference between the amounts quoted by the vendors and the amounts charged by the vendors is found.
