Job Summary

Directs the administrative, management and personnel functions of a multi-building residential complex for University students. Provides the leadership to develop a community that encourages academic and personal growth. Supervises a diverse group of residential staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related area plus two years experience in residence life management, programming, student activities or equivalency required. Demonstrated supervision, organization, planning, group dynamics, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Master's degree in College Student Personnel or related area and one year post-master’s related experience preferred.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides direct supervision to Assistant Residential Education Coordinators (graduate students) and indirect supervision to Resident Advisor staff.
  2. Manages administrative functions for the area including occupancy, facility issues/concerns, capital improvement projects, renewal and replacement suggestions and appropriate billing for building damages.
  3. Oversees the overall programming efforts for the living area that foster growth opportunities and positive relationships among residents.
  4. Serves as a liaison to campus partners associated with living/learning programs. Collaborates with University departments to evaluate and revise these programs.
  5. Acts as the student conduct hearing officer to address student conduct policy violations and takes action as appropriate. Maintains accurate records in an online student conduct system.
  6. Serves as a referral agent for students with academic, career or personal concerns.
  7. Supports the development of student leadership and student government activities.
  8. Provides leadership to collateral projects which include student leader selection, training, department programming, diversity initiatives, professional development activities, staff recognition and representing the department on various committees within Student Affairs.
  9. Recommends, interprets and implements housing and University policies.
  10. Works with maintenance and custodial staff to ensure a clean and safe living environment.
  11. Participates in the rotating on-call coverage with other Residential Education staff members. Responds to building emergencies and student crisis situations, including on-site management and upward communication protocols.
  12. Builds effective partnerships with staff, students and University departments.

Problem Solving

Incumbents encounter a wide array of issues, some of which are handled according to department protocol while other issues are resolved in collaboration with others. Incumbents must interact well with a diverse group of students, parents, staff and University administrators and have the ability to provide the appropriate resolution.

Comments

This position and associated staff are critical components of the Housing and Residential Education program as they have a direct impact on the quality of life experienced by all members of the residential community.

Incumbents are provided with an on-campus furnished apartment plus utilities, internet and local telephone service at no cost. Meals are also provided at no cost when the dining services are available. Some evening and weekend work is required.
