Job Summary

Develops and coordinates international education opportunities.  Maintains and manages study abroad programs, including semester or academic year exchanges, faculty directed short-term programs, international internships, and the international service learning programs.  Employs professional counseling skills to advise students who wish to study abroad concerning opportunities available and how they provide positive educational experiences that help students achieve personal, educational, and professional goals.  Works with faculty, departments, and colleges to assist in establishing and directing international education programs.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, or equivalency, plus three years of experience in developing student programs and services; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Knowledge of global political and economic situations and demonstrated human relations and organizational skills are essential elements for this position. Experience working or studying abroad is highly desirable.

Master's Degree is preferred, as is a background that includes the ability to market concepts of international education.

Essential Functions

  1. Advises students and faculty by matching their goals with a particular program, and informs them of all available options; advises foreign exchange students to enable them to complete academic requirements.
  2. Arranges program details and logistics, such as travel, transportation, lodging, registration, brochures, advertising, negotiating credits and promoting programs to facilitate student/faculty participation.
  3. Promotes programs in different media outlets and targets markets to create program awareness and increase participation.
  4. Provides and implements pre-departure orientations for specific programs to distribute information intended to facilitate success for participants in a cross-cultural environment.
  5. Proposes new study abroad programs to meet student needs and works closely with colleges, departments and faculty to approve and implement new programs.
  6. Interviews applicants, reviews individual file for completeness, and forwards names of those that meet requirements for program selection.
  7. Coordinates and manages study abroad scholarship programs to distribute financial aid for the purpose of increasing and broadening international education participation.
  8. Prepares and maintains applicant/student records in coordination with Admissions, the Registrar's Office, and other relevant departments.
  9. Promotes international education and study abroad, negotiates credit for study abroad, selects program mentors and refers students.
  10. Supervises part-time student interns who assist in accomplishing all the above tasks.

Problem Solving

The incumbent has the authority to determine what action to take in emergency situations, and must be capable of identifying and proposing solutions for problems that arise both during planning and preparation for study abroad programs and during the program orientation. He/she also has the authority to provide information to prepare students for experience abroad in a cross-cultural communication course for semester/academic year participants and short term pre-departure orientations, as well as create effective marketing strategies and select students for certain programs.

A request from a faculty member to establish a new program would be referred to the supervisor for a final decision.

The incumbent manages Office of Global Engagement resources to accomplish essential functions.  He/she works with an annual budget, decides on purchase of essential supplies, and assigns appropriate tasks to part-time student interns.
