Job Summary

PS Genetic Counselor, Temporary License is responsible for providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects, genetic disorders or who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions, under the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor. Identifies, investigates, interprets, and communicates potential risk factors and provides support and counseling to families and patients by referring them to relevant support services under the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor. A temporary Genetic Counseling License is required for this position and is only good for 18 months, after which time the candidate must have a full Genetic Counseling License. This position is supervised by a Licensed Genetic Counselor while learning the nuances involved with genetic services. The level of autonomy is limited in this learning role.

Qualifications

Required
Current Temporary Genetic Counselor License in the State of Utah.
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.

Essential Functions

  • Performs genetic risk assessments by collecting and evaluating medical and family histories (with supervision).
  • Analyzes and interprets information obtained from patients, medical records, and resource materials (with supervision).
  • Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature, and incorporates it into clinical practice (with supervision).
  • Explains testing options, procedures, test results and their implications; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed (with
  • supervision).
  • Works with health care teams in the development and implementation of the care plan (with supervision).
  • Advises patients and families regarding financial and community resources (with supervision).
  • Evaluates outcomes and modifies testing or medical recommendations (with supervision).
  • Facilitates involvement of treatment team members, produces timely reports, and schedules of team conferences (with supervision).
  • Contacts payers, and submits reports regarding initial assessment, expected outcome, cost and recommended discharge plan (with supervision).
  • Ensures the payer is represented in staffing conferences when requested (with supervision).
  • May engage in research activities related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling (with supervision).

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development.

  • Demonstrates the ability to provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
  • Ability to promote the facilitation of open and accurate communication among patients, their families, referral providers, payers, and the health care team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Employees must be able to meet the following requirements with or without accommodation:
  • This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
