Job Summary

Independently oversees animal care activities at multiple campus locations. Oversees specialty areas within in the animal care program.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Bachelor’s degree + four years of related experience or 12 years of related experience.
  • LATG or CVT

Essential Functions

  • Prepares schedules of normal animal husbandry, tasks husbandry employees and ensures that assignments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Trains animal care and supervisory staff, ensures that procedures are performed in alignment with departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Independently mentors supervisory staff and helps provide opportunities for career growth.
  • Independently manages animal care staff in accordance with institutional human resources guidelines, including hiring, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination.
  • Maintains supply inventory to ensure availability for facility operations.
  • Reviews assigned program areas for deficiencies and ensures correction of issues related to procedures, equipment, and policies.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable animal care regulations.
  • Coordinates animal care activities across the department to ensure service continuity and uniformity.
  • Interfaces with research staff and other department leaders to address program-level needs, manages high-level organizational projects and changes.
  • Analyzes facility performance metrics to optimize service delivery.
  • Coordinates with veterinary staff to assure health and welfare of animals.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment; Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
  • Seldom: Occasionally handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
  • Often: Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
  • Seldom: Lifting - up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.
