Job Summary

Under direction, oversees the daily operation of one or more animal research areas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or 8 years of relevant work experience
• LAT or CVT to be obtained within one year in the position.

Essential Functions

• Prepares schedules of normal animal husbandry, tasks husbandry employees and ensures that assignments are completed in a timely manner.
• Trains animal care staff, ensures that procedures are performed in alignment with departmental standard operating procedures.
• Under direction, mentors other employees and helps provide opportunities for career growth.
• Under direction, manages animal care staff in accordance with institutional human resources guidelines, including hiring, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination.
• Reviews assigned animal housing sites for deficiencies and ensures correction of issues related to procedures, equipment, and policies.
• Maintains supply inventory to ensure availability for facility operations.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

• Nearly Continuously: Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment; Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
• Seldom: Occasionally handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

• Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
• Often: Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
• Seldom: Lifting - up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.
