Job Summary

Under direction, provides clinical care to research animals. Participates in all aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including daily monitoring and treatment, maintaining accurate health records, and providing requested technical services.

Qualifications

• GED or HS Diploma
• Associate's Degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
• ALAT to be obtained within one year in the position.

Essential Functions

• Routine scheduling and task assignments for support staff. Assisting in training and development of entry level staff.
• Provides clean caging, bedding, food, and water to animals. Under direction assist with Veterinary care programs. Communicate needs or concerns to management level
• Sanitizes animal cages and equipment, operates washroom machinery and autoclaves. Ensure fulfillment of cage supply orders. Coordinates sanitation efficacy testing and maintenance windows. Communicate needs or concerns to management level
• Cleans animal facility floors and surfaces, removes trash and other wastes. Ensure completion of sanitation tasks. Communicate needs or concerns to management level
• Reports animal health issues and environmental deviations to supervisory staff
• Compiles and review submitted facility records following departmental procedure and policy.
• Submits supply orders for approval and fulfillment

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

• Nearly Continuously: Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment; Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
• Seldom: Occasionally handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

• Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
• Often: Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
• Seldom: Lifting - up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.
