Job Summary

Provides care for laboratory animals and their environment through animal husbandry and keeps records according to State, Federal and University regulations.

Qualifications

  • GED or HS Diploma
  • Four years’ related experience or a related Associate's Degree. 
  • ALAT to be obtained within one year in the position.

Essential Functions

  • Provides clean caging, bedding, food, and water to animals. Assist Veterinary care staff.
  • Sanitizes animal cages and equipment, operates washroom machinery and autoclaves. QC of cage supply orders.
  • Cleans animal facility floors and surfaces, removes trash and other wastes. QC of Sanitation procedures.
  • Reports animal health issues and environmental deviations to supervisory staff
  • Completes facility records documenting husbandry, environment, and inventory
  • Maintains workstation supply levels.

Comments

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment; Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
  • Seldom: Occasionally handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
  • Often: Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
  • Seldom: Lifting - up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.
