Job Summary

With minimal supervision, this position advises a diverse population of students regarding their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. Uses professional advising and guidance skills to assess diverse needs of students and provide appropriate advice related to academic planning and progress leading to graduation. Contributes to the design, implementation, and evaluation of advising programs that contribute to the academic advising mission of the academic unit. Serves as a team leader and may supervise student staff in the absence of or at the request of direct supervisor, but the primary function is advising.

This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect and equity that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel safe, valued, welcomed, and respects all students in their quest for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (1 year of education is equivalent to 2 years’ experience).
  • Two years of direct academic advising experience 
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

Essential Functions

  1. Meets with students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions, major exploration, course planning and registration, transfer credit evaluation/substitution or advanced degree requirements.
  2. Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  3. Actively participates in campus-based professional development communities including but not limited to "UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advances direct skills in academic advising." Duties include participating in sub-committees within the community. 
  4. Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms to monitor student progress and guide proactive student interventions. Participates in the delivery of proactive advising strategies for assigned student populations on the basis of data analytic platforms.
  5. Proficient in degree tracking software (i.e Degree Audit), record keeping systems (PeopleSoft, Banner) and one additional advising related technology (Civitas, On Base, Student Data Warehouse, CRM software, etc.)
  6. Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit.
  7. Develops and presents education programs designed to supplement or enhance academic preparedness.
  8. Collects and disseminates information to students, faculty and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.
  9. Coordinates and/or participates in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student and parent orientation sessions.
  10. Serves on University committees and makes recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes and program development and published materials.
  11. Coordinates data compilation, statistical reports and correspondence, depending upon the area of assignment.
  12. Participates in local and national professional associations by serving on planning committees and presenting at conferences and seminars.
  13. Contributes to selection and training of new advising staff.
  14. May participate in search committees for new hires in department, including both staff and faculty roles.
  15. May act as a mentor for programming communities for students with in their area.
  16. May mentor student employees and participate in hiring, training and evaluating those employees.
  17. May represent department or area at campus-wide meetings and initiatives.
  18. Participates in programming communities for students within their area. Including, but not limited to activities such as overseeing an existing mentoring program, student organization, etc.
  19. The position is distinguished from lower level advising positions in that incumbents have responsibilities for program development and may deal with more complex advising-related issues. Incumbents also possess a full range of professional knowledge and experience, which allows them to work independently with less supervision and review.
