Job Title: Medical Informaticist

Job Summary

The Medical Informaticist (MI) participates in various aspects of standardizing data extraction, transformation, and loading, as well as preparation of datasets to solve complex problems in healthcare research and operations. The MI works collaboratively with end-users including researchers to recommend strategies for problem analysis, study design, and apply rigorous data science methods. The MI also serves as the front-line support for data-related questions from end-users, and is responsible for standardizing, documenting and maintaining a repertoire of answers and solutions to common problems. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Qualifications

Required

  • Masters Degree in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Bioengineering or equivalent, with an emphasis on Healthcare.
  • 2 years of experience with healthcare data warehousing, electronic medical records, and data preparation & analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying controlled medical terminologies like SNOMEDCT, LOINC, RxNorm, etc. in healthcare.

Preferred

  • Clinical training (e.g. Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc.).
  • Demonstrated expertise in a broad array of data science theories and techniques.
  • Demonstrated authorship of journal articles, posters, and other forms of peer-reviewed publications.

Essential Functions

  • Designs key components of the informatics infrastructure, including terminology, data models, knowledge resources, clinical decision logic, complex workflows, dynamic end-user interfaces, aggregations of data designed to support research and quality initiatives.
  • Defines standard phenotypes and patient cohorts for clinical research and healthcare operations.
  • Recommends and integrates controlled medical terminologies in data normalization, and prepares standardized data extracts for research and analysis.
  • Performs source system analysis for electronic medical record and other ancillary systems.
  • Mentors graduate student interns.

Problem Solving

  • Significant experience architecting Data Warehouse solutions within Healthcare and or Life Sciences industries.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of clinical information systems, theoretic and applied research and graduate-level educational activities.
  • Demonstrated technical abilities in areas including data-driven applications, electronic medical records, etc.
  • Strong database programming skills (e.g. SQL, PL/SQL, etc.) as well as data preparation and data analysis skills.
  • Experience with statistical tools, data-mining, machine learning, and other modeling and simulation tools.
  • Excellent clinical research, analysis & problem-solving skills.
  • Current or previous work experience in biostatistics preferred.
