Job Summary

Performs Journeyman or Master Electrician level construction work using acquired knowledge and skills pertaining to the installation, alteration, inspection, and assessment of electrical apparatus and equipment. Oversees and implements electrical construction and remodel projects providing on-site direction, assigning tasks, and performing quality control. Responsible for the successful completion of projects as well as other on the job personnel.

Qualifications

Journeyman electrician license from the State of Utah or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Minimum of 5 years of experience at the journeyman or master electrician level. Experience in directing others, making on-site decisions about a project, controlling project costs, communicating with customers.

A valid Utah driver’s license is required.

Applicant must have good written and verbal communication skills and be willing to work in a customer service type of environment.

Essential Functions

1. Applies experience and knowledge to the installation of customer requested electrical projects. Projects will vary in size from the installation of receptacles for equipment, to classroom, office, laboratory, or other space remodels. Uses a wide variety of tools and equipment commonly used by electricians.
2. Calculates load requirements and assesses current available capacity for the installation of electrical equipment, devices, controllers, and other electrical apparatus in academic, laboratory, research, and administrative areas.
3. Responsible for providing redline drawings to the Records Management group and preparation of upload into the repository.
4. Trouble shoots various electrical installations and makes alterations in order to meet the customer’s needs.
5. Ensures that installations and alterations meet current codes, university standards, and compliance.
6. Works in a CMMS system in order to track job labor and material costs. Sets project schedules and justifies changes as needed. Maintains accurate time cards and project logs.
7. Maintains a good working relationship with customers and clients and is responsible for proper communication to supervisor, customers, and other stakeholders in a project.
8. Maintains a safe working environment and practices good housekeeping skills in order to keep and leave the jobsite clean
9. May be called upon to train or direct others.
10. Navigates Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and One Note. Familiar with viewing of plans in Autocad.

Problem Solving

This person must be able to work without supervision and make proper decisions on the job.  

Problems encountered in this position may include working with antiquated electrical systems, old or deteriorated building components or finishes.

Working around student, faculty, and staff schedules in order to accommodate their needs to maintain a learning and working environment.

Comments

A working knowledge of the hazards and the applicable safety precautions for service of clinical electrical items are important aspects of this job. Unlike typical electrical work, the incumbent may work on circuits that are kept active and functioning due to the unique requirements of the University community (health care facility and research activities). In addition, the electrical safety requirements for individual pieces of equipment must always be foremost in the mind of the person performing the inspection, repair, calibration or test of clinically applied items. Initiative and independent judgment must be exercised in completing assignments according to blueprints, electrical codes and safety requirements.

The incumbent is subject to call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to respond to emergencies that involve the campus distribution system.
