Job Title: Cardiac Device Technician

Job Summary

This position serves as part of an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and other support staff. The incumbent interacts with cardiac patients, specifically those with implantable devices, in order to monitor and analyze heart rhythm data.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalency.

Preferred

  • Two years of EKG or heart rhythm interpretation experience.
  • Completion of a Cardiac Device Technology Program.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Essential Functions

  • Maintains a wound and device check clinic schedule each week.
  • Operates sophisticated computerized data acquisition and device interrogation equipment.
  • Programs implantable cardiac devices to maintain appropriate heart rhythm and therapy, under the direction of a physician or by approved protocol.
  • Evaluates and interprets heart rhythms in order to recommend and perform adjustments on implantable devices according to standard follow-up recommendations.
  • Reprograms cardiac devices and defibrillators as appropriate for diagnostics and other procedures.
  • Maintains a database of all patients with implantable devices.
  • Answers patient calls and questions regarding rhythm-related concerns.

Problem Solving

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Ability to travel with provider teams to outreach locations on occasion, potentially requiring overnight stays.
  • Ability to carry a pager to answer all inpatient and outpatient cardiac device calls.
  • Ability to self-direct and be task oriented.
  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communications skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pacemakers, ICD, ECG and other areas of cardiology.
  • Ability to work independently and continually stay up to date on related, new technology.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
