Job Summary

Clinical Staff Research Assistant - CPOE Authorized

Performs varied support functions, including gathering and contributing information or materials for research projects.

Qualifications

One year of research experience or equivalency required; demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

One of the following: Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah; Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah; Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA; Current Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT; Current Medical Assistant Certification through NCCT; Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA; Credentialed for Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE).

Proficient in EHR order entry as demonstrated by knowledge in the following areas; anatomy and physiology, basic laboratory values, critical thinking, electronic health records, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), medical terminology and pharmacology.

An understanding of research protocols and procedures preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Essential Functions

  1. Compiles data from a variety of sources including interviews, literature sources and medical and genealogical records.
  2. Provides assistive care to patients. Facilitates the efficient delivery of patient care, supports the professional role of the licensed staff, and provides support and assistance as directed.
  3. Enters information into department’s computer system.
  4. Assists research employees in preparing manuscripts and presentation materials by creating slides, charts, graphs and handouts.
  5. Maintains up to date files and records of research data.
  6. Searches sources such as reference works, documents, statistical records and evaluates applicability of collected data to research subject.
  7. Drafts correspondence to answer inquiries and responds to requests from agencies about specific projects.
  8. Edits research papers, project reports and publication materials.
  9. Arranges for the printing and graphic art requirements for printed materials.
  10. Maintains an internal library on project information resources and data collected.
  11. Performs quality control through path audits in order to resolve discrepancies and overlaps with data.
  12. Schedules appointments, visits and meetings.

Problem Solving

The incumbent works under general supervision in the performance of most tasks and may determine the prioritization of routine work assignments and assist in establishing standardized questions for interviews.

When compiling information from various sources, particularly interviews, the incumbent must evaluate what is critical to the goals of the study and have the ability to elicit cooperation from participants. The incumbent must be aware of the various stages during the research project so he/she can give accurate information to outside sources as well as assist in keeping the project on schedule. The employee must be able to multi-task with varied assignments and be aware of resources needed to accomplish publishing/printing objectives.

Comments

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
