Job Summary
The Interpretive Specialist is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing interpretation programs consistent with botanical gardens, museums, and other academic research areas or cultural facilities where interpretation is used to communicate messages, stories, information and experiences.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in interpretation, exhibit design, scientific writing, museum studies, education or related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated experience in interpretive or exhibition planning and implementation in a botanical garden setting, museum, or other cultural facility with broad knowledge of the exhibition field and current trends. Proficient experience using Microsoft Office Suite or other computer programs may be required.
Individuals must demonstrate a working knowledge of how to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Master's degree in related area may be preferred.

Essential Functions
Supervises, plans, develops, designs, and implements interpretive content for a specific cultural facility.
Identifies the need and opportunity for interpretive programs, takes the lead role in planning, developing, and implementing excellent interpretation programs for a specified organization.
Oversees signage and exhibits for all areas of a specific cultural area; print and web materials; staff and volunteer training in interpretive techniques; podcasts and/or cell phone guides; special exhibits; programs and other new interpretive projects.
Review, maintain, conduct inventory and update all existing interpretive content as needed. Participate in the development of an interpretive master plan.
Oversee the evaluation of interpretive programs and installations.
Present lectures and/or presentations to staff, volunteers, and guests on a variety of topics relating to the organizations interpretive programs and content.
Track and evaluate usage of interpretive tools.
Develops and fosters relationships with community partnerships.
Problem Solving
Incumbents in this position are expected to be familiar with the department’s policies and procedures and have working knowledge of University and department organizations and procedures in order to answer and assist staff and visitors. Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills are essential to the position.
