Job Summary
The Environmental Compliance Coordinator will assist in ensuring compliance and implementation of local, State and Federal regulations relevant to the University of Utah Environmental Protection programs. These program support roles will include hazardous materials and wastes, or air and water quality compliance, among other duties. This position will be expected to use chemical knowledge, the Hazardous Materials Table and EPA laws to segregate, lab pack, label, assign waste codes and prepare chemicals for shipment as well as chemical inventory development and maintenance or use their academic and other technical training to support the planning, permitting, auditing and development of operations related to air and water quality compliance.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with major course work in chemistry, environmental health, life sciences or a related field or have 5 years relevant experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
Recent 40 hour OSHA HAZWOPER training, knowledge of RCRA requirements/regulations, knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waste codes, manifesting and Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR). Or knowledge and experience with local, State and Federal regulations deriving from the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, specifically including but not limited to: Title V air permitting, stormwater management.
Incumbent must pass a medical examination and be cleared to wear negative and positive pressure respirators and personal protective equipment within three months of employment.
A current Driver’s License is required.

Essential Functions
Research, segregate and assign chemical grouping categories to waste chemicals and mixtures based on compatibility and label packing rules described in applicable environmental and transportation regulations.
Review, prepare and submit lab pack inventories and waste profiles to contractor for approval prior to shipment.
Offer technical or regulatory support and share operational supervision to the Environmental Technicians as delegated by Hazardous Materials Manager.
Responds to and assists with mitigation of emergencies and spills involving chemical and biological materials.
Maintains and updates the hazardous and regulated waste database management system.
Processes chemicals for hazardous materials shipments according to DOT, FAA, IATA and other applicable requirements.
Researches and keeps current with applicable transportation and environmental compliance laws and regulations.
Educates researchers on chemical inventory, waste minimization techniques, proper waste labeling and storage.
Prepares and analyzes quality assurance reports, maintains applicable databases and implements changes.
Consolidates or bulks compatible high BTU lab waste chemicals into drums.
Makes necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) determinations based on potential chemical or biological exposure.
Operates, troubleshoots and performs minor maintenance on process equipment which may include but not limited to an autoclave system or solvent distillation equipment.
Conducts weekly RCRA inspections of 90 day facility.
Supports the independent evaluation of planned equipment, prior to installation, relative to air and water quality compliance considerations.
Develops, tracks, designs and provides training on all aspects of the Air and Water programs as warranted or required by permit or plan, and maintains records as required by law.
Designs, supports and maintains databases and recordkeeping on all aspects of the Air and Water programs as warranted or required by permit or plan, and maintains records as required by law.
Researches and keeps current with environmental compliance laws and regulations.
May lead or manage the work of others.
Problem Solving
The incumbents generally follow an extensive set of rules and regulations while performing work. The incumbent provides training and education that requires persuasive communication to encourage safe and best practices. This position is required to understand and stay current with all health and safety related issues.
Comments
The work environment may involve regular exposure to hazardous and potentially hazardous wastes and materials, which requires strictly following safety precautions and wearing appropriate protective gear.
Incumbents may be required to work extended hours and provide on-call coverage. Some travel is required.
Incumbents must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
