Job Title: Assoc. Director, Public Safety

Job Summary

Develops and implements policies, programs and financial objectives for department campus safety and crime reduction programs and policies. Ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws. Develops, implements and manages security and police services including (but not limited to), police services, security, and law enforcement programs, police service planning, security equipment management, organizational development, and community relations. Participates in preparing department budgets and in setting department goals. Ensures continuity and quality customer service between University departments and community.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, or related area, or equivalency required; Master’s degree in related area preferred; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and Police Academy Category 1 Police Officer certification, and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Qualified applicants must successfully complete a thorough background investigation, and must be willing to submit to a drug screening test.

Administrative familiarity with the Spillman CAD-RMS or similar system is highly desirable.

Essential Functions

  1. Has command responsibility for all DPS security and police operations at the University; Develops and implements customer service, human resources and financial objectives for assigned departments consistent with the University’s goals and objectives.
  2. Supervises Police Lieutenants and coordinates staff work assignments; Oversees department human resources management including recruitment, performance evaluations and retention of staff.
  3. Manages departments’ budgets, estimates budgetary requirements for special projects and oversees purchases and inventory.
  4. Implements and administers new and existing department programs and services to internal and external customers. Evaluates program effectiveness. May carry out and implement logistic plans and procedures to ensure that internal university and external entities’ needs are met.
  5. Assumes authority and performs functions of the department director/ Chief of Police in his/her absence.
  6. Participates in the development and interpretation of department polices to ensure compliance with the University’s policies and regulatory requirements. Authorizes exceptions to University policy related to assigned departments. Ensures compliance with Federal and state regulations.
  7. Establishes internal objectives and implements procedures to meet goals. Assists in setting department short and long-term goals.
  8. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community and other institutions.
  9. Serves as part of the department management team.
