Job Summary
Under general direction of the Director/Radiation Safety Officer, responsible for major technical aspects of the radiation protection at the University or at any locations which radiation sources are used under University auspices. Act as Director/Radiation Safety Officer in their absence. Responsible for supervision of the laboratory survey program and Radiation Analysts and Radioactive Waste Technician to assure that guidelines and regulations are followed and policy is executed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in physical science, engineering or biological science, supplemented with six years (6) of related experience. Certified Health Physicist (CHP) preferred.
Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree in health physics, or a related field; experience in a institutional broad scope license radiation safety program that includes medical uses and research and administrative experience. American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements for Radiation Safety Office at a medical facility as provided for in 10 CFR 35.

Essential Functions
1. Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the absence of the RSO – 10%
2. Serves as the proxy for the Radiation Safety Officer-15% (Attending Meetings, ie Construction, Hospital Haz Mat, Coordinating Admin such as updates to RPR’s and Rad Manuals.)
3. Responsible for the laboratory survey program oversight. Oversees the quality assurance of the reviews of the research laboratory radiation safety inspections reports; evaluates and ensures compliance with established radiation safety standards, procedures and policies; develops, implements and documents corrective action if violations of regulations, license conditions or program weaknesses are identified. 10 %
4. Performs some supervisory duties such as assigning reviews, instructing and training personnel and providing input to evaluating performance. 10 %
5. Performs the essential functions of Health Physicist. 15 %
6. Maintains and audits policies and procedures to implement the radiation safety program; conducts or oversees inspections and audits of the radiation safety program. 10%
7. Oversees and/or performs activities centered on radiation equipment and instrumentation such as evaluating and selecting equipment and instrumentation to be purchased; calibration equipment; preparing documentation assuring proper function by performing maintenance or arranging for needed repairs and maintenance; instruction technicians in equipment use. 6%
8. Maintains a working knowledge of the radioactive materials licenses, and Utah Regulations for the use of radiation. 10 %
9. Identifies and evaluates all potential radioactive effluents with University facilities and assures adequate monitoring and documentation. 1 %
10. Performs leak test of sealed radioactive sources and conducts regular inspections and surveys of radiation – generating machines and facilities. 2 %
11. Participates in various University radiation safety committees and in professional health physics societies. 3 %
12. Plans and conducts orientation and training coursed in radiation safety and/or radioisotope techniques. 8 %
Problem Solving
The incumbent provides independent evaluation and management of the equipment, procedures, calculations, and quality assurance for the radiation measurements and exposure evaluations performed by departmental employees and other users. This position provides independent professional opinions and advice to faculty and staff on regulatory requirements and good practices for radiation protection.
Representative challenges encountered by the incumbent include evaluating potential problems to patients or staff members as a result of exposure to radiation sources and making shielding procedural recommendations to controls such exposures. This includes coordination with state officials and outside contractors to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. The incumbent assists departments in the use of radiation equipment preparing the licensing application , supervising installation of equipment, and training personnel in the use of equipment.
