Job Summary
Responsible for the operations, calibration and maintenance of the university nuclear reactor, systems and ancillary facilities. Trains and administers students and assigned personnel in the operation and utilization of the nuclear reactor, associated laboratories, and tracking systems. Ensures facility activities are appropriately tracked daily. Ensures licensing guidelines and standards, safety and security requirements, are met daily. Knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations governing the operation, maintenance and licensing of nuclear research reactor. Skill in the operation and maintenance of nuclear research reactors. Ability to effectively write and communicate with others.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or science field AND completion of an approved training program in nuclear reactor maintenance AND minimum two years of nuclear reactor operation and maintenance experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience);
OR, Completion of an approved training program in nuclear reactor maintenance AND seven years of nuclear reactor operation and maintenance experience.
Must obtain a Senior Reactor Operator license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for assigned facility within six months from date of employment.

Essential Functions
1. Under the supervision of the Director of Nuclear Engineering Program, develops weekly, short-term and long-term plans, on utilization of the research reactor and associated nuclear engineering laboratories, and works on the updates/advancements of the class lab practices.
2. Responsible for all phases of safe and efficient reactor operations; ensuring compliance with all Regulatory requirement; Responsible for insuring all events and activities are properly recorded and imported into the CAP system.
3. Responsible for the proper operation, maintenance, calibration and replacement of all electronic equipment in and around the reactor facility. Responsible for the maintenance of all documentation, forms and log-books (i.e. record system of reactor operation) as required by facility license and other in-house policies and practices.
4. Recommends proposed changes to the reactor, reactor equipment and associated facilities and of procedures to be utilized, and assures such changes are properly reflected by changes in the reactor drawings, descriptions and procedures, as well as develop new procedures to reflect such changes.
5. Enforces safety regulations regarding reactor operations and entrance to and exit from reactor rooms, by observing the rooms for unauthorized persons, observing or listening for alarms, or announcing changes in reactor operations.
6. Teaches NUCL6060 and NUCL6061 classes for training students to operate the TRIGA reactor, and continues with training until the NRC exam is scheduled. Trains new SROs, assists in developing efficient training; retrains students/SROs on a regular basis to meet guidelines of the requalification program; supervises in full the activities of subordinates at the facility.
7. Reviews all personnel and students’ radiation exposures and radiation survey records and adjusts operating procedures to maintain low exposures for persons using the facilities.
